A Musician’s Tale

Sitting in my room when I was 8 years old I was in “timeout” for some minor infringement. I picked up an acoustic guitar that had been wandering our house for some years and began to pluck at the strings. I fiddled with the tuning pegs on the headstock and listened as it changed the pitch of the sounds. I stayed in my room long after my timeout was over, transfixed by the instrument in my hands. Much to my parents amazement I came out playing the Star Wars theme on the worn out guitar. This moment is frozen in my memory and it still stirs my heart. This is the moment I saw my future and the excitement of it drives me to this day.

Having been born in Manchester, NH I spent much of my formative years in Perth, Western Australia. In primary school I was chosen for my aptitude to participate in a specialist music program called the “School of Instrumental Music” that continued on until my graduation from High School. I began studying classical guitar and in High School was one of only a handful of students allowed to take on a second instrument. My music teacher handed me a trombone and the cool brass felt natural in my hands. An extension of my arms and the melodies in my mind, music soon flowed out of the instrument in beautiful waves.

The High School I attended was chosen for me due to the one-of-a-kind music program it offered. In years 11 and 12 skilled music students auditioned for and few were chosen to participate in a Certificate IV program at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA). A world-renowned performing arts college attended by the likes of Hugh Jackman, Jim Jeffries, and Tim Minchin I was privileged to be accepted to the program. After two gruelling years of both High School and College studies I graduated in 2012 from both High School and WAAPA with a Certificate IV in Jazz music.

Many other musical experiences came my way during that time. One opportunity was an audition for and an invitation to join the West Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra where a highlight was a solo during a national television broadcast of the Australian Telethon. I was also lucky to be able to perform at the famous Sydney Opera House with our accomplished high school Concert Band. All these experiences fuelled my fire and lead me to my dream school, Berklee College of Music.

Since coming home to the US but before beginning my studies at Berklee I spent my time exploring the many paths music offers and found myself travelling further down a road I had begun in Australia; composition. An avid Science Fiction fan I began to weave together a self-penned story told through music. A fantasy tale of otherworldly gods and planets, the world of Merithius took form and it has become an addiction. After settling into Berklee I set myself the task of bringing Merithius to life. With the concept songs written, I needed to find accomplished musicians that had the skill and motivation to play the complicated passages. With the help of five people I now call my best friends, Merithius in now a reality and a passion shared by us all.

Soon after choosing my Contemporary Wring and Production major I jumped head in and quickly applied to and was honoured to become an employee at the prestigious Mix One Studios in Boston. Now, as I begin on the new path of music production, I feel the flame burn brighter still. To say, “Music is my life”, would be an understatement of the actuality of my world. Music and the creation of it in all aspects rule my mind. I find connection with music in my everyday tasks and it never ceases to color everything I touch. My music production studies along with my band Merithius and all the other opportunities I strive to take advantage of at Berklee fulfil me but still drive me. Music is more than my life. Music is my everything.
